Abstract

This study explores the oral narratives surrounding Sendang Tirtomoyo, a spring in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, using Carl Thompson’s Travel Literature theory and Albert B. Lord’s Concept of Theme. It aims to examine how Thompson’s framework helps analyze the narrator’s journey and identify thematic patterns in oral storytelling. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study is based on interviews with local residents, focusing on how the character "I" engages with the environment, stories, and people to shape a personal travel narrative. The findings show that the narrative reflects Thompson’s three core aspects: Reporting the World, Revealing the Self, and Representing the Other. Furthermore, the study uncovers a recurring theme of magical realism, marked by mystical beliefs and remnants of colonial history preserved by the community. This research contributes to literary studies by integrating travel literature theory with folklore analysis, offering fresh insight into how oral traditions and travel narratives intersect in a localized Indonesian setting.
